Ham and Legs Show #019

So, Legs has returned from his journey to the Oregon Coast.  He talks about his trip, forgets his friend Ann's new beau's name...it's Chad.  Then Ham brings up the Birthers, and somewhere in hell there is a snowball fight, Ham agrees with O'Reilly and Coulter....We KNOW!  She's quite disturbed too, but hey when the crazies make Coulter stand back and say they're crazy, well Ham can't help but agree.  Then they got on the Gates arrest, Rick Beatty will need to come back as a guest and help Legs understand Ham's point of view on this.  And then last but certainly NOT least Health Care and those who want to stop any reform possibilities.  It's great having Legs back.  Hope you enjoy!

Oh, here's the link to the stand up act from Dave Chappelle that Hamtalks about during the Gates conversation...very funny stuff.  If you have heard it before, it's worth another listen.

    I'm getting slammed with emails from folks irate over one particular subject, race, that was discussed on this show. Instead of responding to each individual one, I thought I'd make one big, swooping rebuttal.

    First and foremost, those that know Jody and/or myself, either personally or via the show, know that we both enjoy social discourse and there are, obviously, some subjects we are more passionate about than others. For the most part, Jody and I agree on a lot of issues, and there are those that we don't. As of this writing I can't think of an issue that we are at two opposite ends of the spectrum. You may say the death penalty, but for me it's more of an issue that our judicial and penal systems need an overhaul, than anything else. That and my need for vengeance. But I digress.

    More to the point, on this particular show Jody felt that the "birthers" and the Professor Gates incident had a racial bias. I disagreed. I stated that the "birthers" were just whack-jobs looking to get attention from a bad joke, and that with the Gates issue, though the officer and the professor acted irrationally, and that regardless of the professors skin, all things being equal, he still would have gotten arrested.

    Now where things get a little weird for me is, the angry emails. To be clear, I was never called a racist, and Jody is...well, let's just say that long before, and long after this show ends, I am very grateful to have her as a friend and she means a lot to me.

    So, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that we, as American citizens, aren’t ready for an in-depth discussion on race until…

    …the Right can freely, and very clearly, admit the obvious, that racism exists in many, many forms;

    …the Left can hear criticism of people of color without screaming “racism” and ending the conversation;

    …the Right commits to exercising a zero tolerance to all forms of racism, and stops making lame-ass excuses like, “..this was an isolated scenario.”;

    …the Left stops talking out of the side of its mouth, expecting “whites” to ignore the color of a person’s skin while being forced to employ identity politics, and policies.

    Both sides have a lot of work to do, and I suspect that when all the finger pointing subsides, then the real work will begin, but until then…we’re not ready.

    So, until that time comes I will be the change I want to see in the world. Even if that means telling whack-jobs to go sell crazy somewhere else, or the reason why I'm calling you stupid isn't because of the color of your skin, or your religion, or your social class, it because you said, or did something, stupid.

    Well, apparently I hit a nerve with some of Legs' friends. I don't think and have never thought that Sean is a racist. If that is how it sounded, I apologize to Sean.

    I firmly believe that PART of the Gates controversy and PART of the "Birther" movement has to do with Race. It is subtle and not outright, but I believe it is there. I am not alone in this belief.

    Sean and I disagree. That is ok.

    There are many "isms" that still exist in this country that hopefully, one day, will cease. I've posted a piece from the Young Turks about a situation that happened to a Harvard Student. I posted the Chappelle stand up that we spoke about, and I've posted the Chris Rock video that Sean recently posted on his FB page.

    I agree with Sean that sometimes the Left can jump to the "ism" too quickly and in so doing, that can hamper real discussion and real change...and he is also correct that the Right has a tendency to deny the "isms" in this country and that is also a detriment to understanding.

    Finally, if you have an issue with me, don't e mail Sean about it. Get in touch with me directly.

    Again, Sean, I apologize if you believe I called you a racist. See you Friday.

    oooo, how did I miss nearly a month of ham & legs? eeeek! Dang progressive radio found a radio station here in hell again (yay!) so now I have to squeeze ya all in between Stephie and Tom Hartman and Doc Mike and Mike Malloy and Family Guy...

    Birthers! Gotta love 'em. And yeah, the moon landings were fake and Elvis is making slurpees at 7-11. I think the GOP folks who wanted to drown government in the bathtub have been suplanted by the folks makin' up a batch o' methamphetamie in the bathtub

    Glad to have you back Sean, enough said. As far as you two disagreeing on the subject of race, in an instance like this it is possible that both sides are "right" to some extent. Everybody is going to have an opinion on this touchy subject, just like religion and politics. For this issue let's just find a happy medium and know that nobody is 100% right about anything that can be debated. Who is Rick Beatty????
